E-learning .Assessing Impact of Development Programmes on Food Security

This course has been produced by FAO in collaboration with Wageningen University and Research Centre for Development Innovation.

The course provides a comprehensive yet readily accessible source of guidance for assessing impact of food security programmes. It brings together the latest information on impact assessment from numerous guidelines and presents it within the context of large scale food security programmes. The focus is on large scale programmes but the methods and approaches described in the course are equally applicable to smaller food security projects.  

Course description
  • The course has three Units:
    1. Assessing Programme Impact on Food Security
    2. Methods and Approaches for Assessing Impact
    3. Interpreting and Communicating Impact Assessment Results.
  • There are in total 11 lessons which range from 45 to 90 minutes to complete, for a total duration of about 10 hours of self-paced instruction.
  • Each lesson achieves a specific set of learning objectives, using interactive step-by-step instructions and exercises which help reinforce what is being explained.
  • Each lesson includes a list of relevant online resources and additional reading.
Target Audience
The target audience for this course includes both users and generators of information on programme impact: 
  • Food security programme managers and designers
  • External evaluators
  • Monitoring and Evaluation Officers
  • Government officials, donors and other decision makers.
Methodology
This course provides an interactive self-paced learning environment in which learners can understand the concepts, methods and approaches of assessing impact of large scale food security programmes.  In order to support this, the course uses the latest instructional methods in e-learning such as storytelling, illustrative case studies, and examples, as well as interactive tests and practice exercises. A wide range of resources are included.
